In a world increasingly mediated by screens, systems, sensors, and intelligent machines, Interaction Design stands at the centre of how people engage with digital products, services, interfaces, and intelligent systems. The discipline brings together design, psychology, research, and technology to imagine how humans and digital systems communicate, and how these interactions can become more humane, accessible, inclusive, and emotionally resonant.

The B.Des. in Interaction Design at WPU GŌA is a four-year, future-oriented programme that trains students to design responsible and human-centered digital experiences. The programme blends creativity with analytical depth, craft with computation, and design sensitivity with strategic insight. Students learn not only to design interfaces, but to understand the human mind, decode behavioural patterns, and shape ethical relationships between people and technology.

Students begin with foundational learning in visual communication, interface design fundamentals, cognitive psychology, human factors, research methods, creative coding, digital prototyping, and systems thinking. Early studios introduce mobile and web UI design, usability principles, information architecture, interaction patterns, digital storytelling, and accessibility. Students develop strong analytical and observational abilities through user journey mapping, behavioural analysis, immersion studies, and hands-on design challenges.

From the second year onward, the programme branches into three specialised pathways, viz. User Experience & Interface Design, Human - AI Interaction, and Service Design & Product Experience, each providing a distinct professional identity while preserving the interdisciplinary richness that defines this programme. Across all studios and pathways, students develop proficiency with contemporary tools, research methodologies, prototyping environments, design systems, and emerging technologies, enabling them to design for complex and evolving digital ecosystems.

Real-world engagement is embedded throughout the curriculum. Students work on collaborative labs, industry-linked projects, social innovation assignments, usability testing cycles, and design sprints with technology partners, startups, non-profits, and government organisations. By the end of the programme, students build strong portfolios that showcase creativity, research rigour, technical fluency, and strategic thinking, positioning them for global careers in design and innovation.

What Will You Learn?

Your learning journey begins with a deep exploration of how humans perceive, interpret, and interact with digital environments. You develop essential skills in interface aesthetics, information structuring, research inquiry, coding logic, user experience mapping, and rapid prototyping. Through studios and labs, you learn to analyse user behaviour, identify friction points, and translate insights into design opportunities.

As you progress, you work across multimodal interactions, advanced prototyping, service systems, digital product ecosystems, and future technologies. You learn to design not only for screens, but for augmented and virtual environments, conversational systems, wearables, IoT-based interactions, and intelligent adaptive systems. You deepen your understanding of design ethics, accessibility, inclusion, cross-cultural communication, and environmental contexts.

By the final year, you are equipped to approach complex problems through design leadership, foresight methods, strategic decision-making, and evidence-based innovation. Your capstone integrates research, creative thinking, interaction modelling, and technological experimentation into a refined, portfolio-ready project.

User Experience (UX) & Interface Design

This specialisation focuses on designing intuitive, elegant, and accessible digital experiences across devices and platforms. Students learn UX research, wireframing, prototyping, UI design, usability testing, design systems, and interface behavior. They develop the ability to create seamless interactions across mobile, web, wearable, and spatial interfaces. Career roles include: UX Designer - designing user flows, wireframes, and user journeys for digital products; UI Designer - creating visual interfaces, layout systems, and responsive designs; Product Designer - working end to end on digital products from research to prototyping; Interaction Designer - crafting micro-interactions, transitions, and behaviour patterns; UX Researcher - conducting usability studies, behavioural research, and testing; Design System Specialist - building scalable design systems and component libraries.

Human-AI Interaction

As AI becomes embedded into everyday tools, from search engines to medical diagnoses, designing for AI-human collaboration becomes essential. Students explore conversational interfaces, recommender systems, generative AI experiences, AI transparency, and ethical design. They learn how to shape interactions that feel trustworthy, supportive, and intuitive, while navigating the complexities of automation and decision support. Career roles include: AI Experience Designer - designing interactions around generative AI, assistants, or automation tools; Conversational Designer - creating chatbots, voice interfaces, and dialogue flows; Human-AI Interaction Specialist - shaping trust, transparency, and explainability in AI systems; Product Designer for AI Tools - designing user experiences for AI-powered products; Responsible AI Designer - ensuring fairness, ethical implications, and safety considerations.

Service Design & Product Experience

This specialisation trains students to design meaningful end-to-end experiences across products, services, and customer ecosystems. Students explore how people interact with organisations through digital platforms, physical touchpoints, support systems, and multi-channel journeys. They learn service blueprinting, journey mapping, experience strategy, product lifecycle design, and methods for improving satisfaction, trust, loyalty, and long-term engagement. The pathway also develops an understanding of operational systems, stakeholder coordination, and how thoughtful design can create seamless, human-centred experiences across complex service environments. Career options include: Service Designer - designing end-to-end service journeys across digital and physical touchpoints; Product Experience Designer - shaping user experiences across the lifecycle of products and platforms; Customer Experience (CX) Strategist - improving satisfaction, loyalty, and relationship quality across channels; Experience Researcher - conducting user studies, journey analysis, and service insight research; Product Manager (Experience Focus) - aligning customer needs, business goals, and product development priorities; Journey Mapping Specialist - identifying friction points and redesigning customer journeys; Innovation Consultant - helping organisations improve services, processes, and user experiences; Service Operations Designer - enhancing service systems, workflows, and stakeholder coordination.

The Four-Year Immersion Journey

1st Year

Students participate in a two-week global Immersion, building a strong foundation through visiting NGOs, industries, hands-on studio work, and exploring materials, making, and prototyping essentials. They learn to see the world through a designer's eye, understanding form, culture, and human needs.

2nd Year

2nd Year

The NGO / Social Immersion exposes students to education, rural development, social enterprises, public data systems, and community-level infrastructure. The curriculum deepens with a focus on systems thinking and user-centric methods. Immersions expose students to real-world contexts, helping them understand the complexities of human behavior and societal challenges, which informs their design process. They also spend one week at the Life Transformation Centre (LTC), developing their ethical lens, leadership skills, and reflective clarity, and undertake a Pune industrial visit to observe real-world production environments.

3rd Year

3rd Year

The Advanced Product Design Studio is a defining experience. Students tackle real-world challenges, developing solutions from concept to prototype. They engage with advanced manufacturing processes and technologies, preparing them for the technical demands of the industry. The National Immersion at a prestigious institute of design deepens exposure to cutting-edge design. The Dubai trade show introduces them to global trends, industry advances and creative explorations. The industry internship at design studios, companies, startups, communication agencies, advertising agencies becomes the foundation for Grand Challenge Studio II, where they turn insights into working prototypes.

4th Year

Students end their journey with a Transdisciplinary Industry Internship / Capstone project which provides invaluable real-world experience, allowing students to work alongside professionals on live projects. Students may undertake a semester exchange with a partner university abroad. The Active Citizenship Program provides a direct understanding of governance, digital policy, regulatory frameworks, and civic-tech.
