Creative Professionals, Not Just Design Students
The programme develops agency-ready communication designers capable of conceptual thinking, strategic execution, storytelling, and professional delivery across multiple media environments.
How do we communicate meaning in a world overwhelmed by information, media noise, algorithms, and fragmented attention?
How can design shape narratives, build trust, influence behaviour, create accessibility, and help people navigate increasingly complex digital and physical environments?
And in a future shaped by artificial intelligence, immersive media, interactive systems, global connectivity, and rapidly evolving communication technologies, who will create the visual languages, stories, interfaces, and experiences that define how societies understand the world?
The B.Des. in Communication Design at WPU GŌA prepares students to engage with these questions through a contemporary, studio-driven, and transdisciplinary design education grounded in visual culture, systems thinking, storytelling, interaction, technology, and real-world communication practice.
At WPU GŌA, communication design is approached not merely as graphic design, but as a discipline that integrates typography, branding, digital media, motion systems, interaction design, animation, storytelling, interface design, strategy, culture, psychology, and emerging technologies.
Students learn how communication operates across identities, institutions, public systems, brands, digital platforms, media ecosystems, and everyday human interactions. The programme stands apart through its integration of design with technology, behavioural understanding, systems thinking, storytelling, entrepreneurship, and immersive media practice. Through intensive studios, digital labs, field immersions, collaborative projects, and interdisciplinary learning environments, students develop the ability to create communication systems that are strategic, meaningful, future-oriented, and socially responsible.
You will be taught by faculty who are practising designers, animators, strategists, visual communicators, researchers, media practitioners, and technologists connected to WPU GŌA's Centres of Excellence and interdisciplinary ecosystems. Their industry work, research, and professional practice directly inform classroom learning, ensuring students understand not only how to create communication, but why communication shapes society.
The B.Des. in Communication Design at WPU GŌA is a four-year undergraduate degree for students who aspire to design visual identities, narratives, media systems, interaction environments, motion experiences, immersive communication platforms, and digital ecosystems that are human-centred, culturally aware, technologically informed, and strategically meaningful.
The programme develops strong foundations across typography and visual systems; branding and identity design; narrative and storytelling systems; motion graphics and time-based media; interaction design and interface systems; information and communication design; animation and visual storytelling; communication strategy and semiotics; user experience and digital interaction; design research and cultural analysis; emerging media and immersive communication; and human-centred communication systems.
Students begin with common design foundations shared across all B.Des. programmes before progressively moving into advanced visual systems, interaction environments, transmedia communication, animation ecosystems, digital storytelling, and specialised communication practice.
A defining strength of the programme is its dual-specialisation model. Every student develops depth through a Within-Domain Specialisation while also building interdisciplinary breadth through a Cross-Domain Specialisation.
Graduates emerge prepared for careers across branding, interaction design, visual communication, animation, motion graphics, UI/UX ecosystems, media strategy, digital storytelling, communication systems, design consulting, content ecosystems, and emerging immersive media industries.

Every student at WPU GŌA, irrespective of their major, completes a carefully designed 40-credit University Common Core. It forms the intellectual bedrock of the entire academic ecosystem and develops ten essential graduate attributes. The Common Core equips students with transversal skills that transcend any single discipline. It creates a shared intellectual language across engineers, designers, psychologists, and managers so that graduates can collaborate effectively on complex, real-world problems. It ensures every student graduates with strong critical thinking, ethical reasoning, communication fluency, data literacy, and systemic perspective, capabilities that are increasingly valued in leadership roles.
Rigorous grounding in design fundamentals, form and aesthetics, visual systems, typography, user-centred research, digital design tools, prototyping techniques, and design strategy. It progresses logically from Year 1 to Year 3, moving from foundational visual and making skills to advanced communication systems thinking and complex project execution. The programme core builds strong disciplinary competence and functional mastery before students move into specialisations, ensuring graduates possess a solid design toolkit that is both conceptually deep and practically applicable.
Students select one specialisation track in Year 3 and complete advanced, domain-specific courses that provide significant depth. The specialisation tracks enable students to develop specialised expertise that prepares them for focused professional roles, entrepreneurship, or higher studies in their chosen area.
The three available tracks are:
These advanced elective courses offer students the flexibility to deepen their expertise within the chosen Within-Domain specialisation or to explore closely related topics that align with their academic and professional interests. Examples include Advanced Typography, Design Futures & Speculative Communication, Inclusive Communication Systems, Sustainable Media Systems, AI Tools for Designers, Public Policy Communication Design, Motion Design for Branding, Data Visualisation & Information Design, and Transmedia Storytelling Strategies.
The Directed Electives allow significant customisation, enabling students to tailor their degree according to their specific career aspirations, whether in brand identity systems, motion graphics, interaction design, information visualisation, social impact communication, or emerging interdisciplinary fields.
In addition to their primary communication design specialisation, every student completes one Cross-Domain Specialisation from another academic cluster (Engineering, Humanities, or Business). Curated options include:
Students may also design a custom cross-domain pathway under faculty guidance. This additional pathway is a defining feature of WPU GŌA graduates and a critical requirement for solving complex, real-world problems. It fosters transdisciplinary fluency and inculcates the ability to integrate communication design insight with computational thinking, human behaviour understanding, or entrepreneurial frameworks, enabling graduates to address societal challenges at the intersection of visual storytelling, technology, innovation, and business.
The culminating experience of the programme is a full-semester, 12-credit Capstone Project in Semester 8. Students undertake a substantial, real-world integrative project which may be a comprehensive brand identity system, transmedia storytelling campaign, information design solution for public systems, motion-driven narrative project, interactive digital experience, or social impact communication initiative. The Capstone is mentored by a faculty–industry panel and requires students to synthesise knowledge from their Within-Domain specialisation, Cross-Domain specialisation, extensive immersions, Independent Inquiry Period (IIP), and core communication design foundations into a meaningful, professional, and portfolio-ready contribution.
Students begin by developing visual literacy, drawing capability, design observation, systems thinking, and communication fundamentals. They explore:
Mini-projects may include poster systems, narrative explorations, typography studies, visual identity experiments, editorial layouts, or observational communication exercises.
