Preparing educators for complexity and transformative learning
Higher education is increasingly called upon to prepare graduates to address complex societal challenges such as climate change, public health, technological transformation, sustainable development, and social inequality. These challenges rarely fit neatly within the boundaries of a single discipline. Instead, they require collaboration across academic fields and meaningful engagement with stakeholders beyond the university.
Transdisciplinary Learning and Teaching (TDL) equips educators with the knowledge, skills, and pedagogical approaches needed to create learning environments where students integrate diverse perspectives, collaborate across disciplines, and work on real-world challenges.
This three-day international Faculty Development Programme introduces participants to the foundations of transdisciplinary learning and provides practical methods for integrating these approaches into teaching, curriculum design, research supervision, and community-engaged education.
Whether you are new to transdisciplinary education or seeking to strengthen existing teaching practices, this programme offers practical tools, international perspectives, and opportunities to learn alongside colleagues from diverse academic backgrounds.

- Understand the principles and foundations of Transdisciplinary Learning and Teaching
- Appreciate the role of transdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex societal challenges
- Design learning activities that encourage collaboration across disciplines
- Facilitate collaborative and participatory learning processes
- Reflect on opportunities for implementing TDL within their own institutional context
Core Learning Themes
Through an immersive, highly interactive programme, participants will explore the conceptual foundations, practical methods, and facilitation skills needed to design and lead transdisciplinary learning in higher education. Sessions combine theory, participatory exercises, case-based learning, reflection, and practical application to participants’ own teaching contexts.

Prof. Barbara Regeer
Prof. Barbara Regeer is Professor of Transdisciplinary Research for Purpose-led Transformation and University Research Chair at the Athena Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She is internationally recognised for her pioneering work in transdisciplinary research, sustainability transitions, knowledge co-creation, systems innovation, and transformative learning. Prof. Regeer has led numerous international research and education initiatives and has extensive experience designing educational programmes that bridge science and society

Prof. Barbara Regeer
Prof. Barbara Regeer is Professor of Transdisciplinary Research for Purpose-led Transformation and University Research Chair at the Athena Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Dr. Emma Emily de Wit
Dr. Emma Emily de Wit is Head of the Transdisciplinary Research Centre at WPU GŌA and an independent researcher specialising in transdisciplinary research and education. With more than ten years of experience in teaching and facilitating transdisciplinary learning, she works at the intersection of higher education, sustainability, participatory research, and knowledge cocreation. She has designed and facilitated faculty development programmes and collaborates with universities and international partners to strengthen innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

This Faculty Development Programme is jointly organised by WPU GŌA in collaboration with the Athena Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
The programme combines international expertise with practical experience in transdisciplinary education, offering participants an opportunity to learn from leading practitioners while engaging with innovative teaching methods that can be directly applied within their own institutions.
