WPU GŌA joins the Global Alliance for Inter- and Transdisciplinarity (ITD Alliance)
WPU GŌA is pleased to announce its institutional membership in the Global Alliance for Inter- and Transdisciplinarity (ITD Alliance), a leading global network dedicated to transdisciplinary education, research, and practice. The ITD Alliance brings universities, research organisations, practitioners, and policymakers together from across the world to promote collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and cultures in addressing complex societal challenges.
About the ITD Alliance
Founded in 2021, the International Transdisciplinarity (ITD) Alliance is a global network dedicated to advancing collaborative research and practice that transcends traditional disciplinary and institutional boundaries. Its mission is to strengthen the worldwide capacity for inter- and transdisciplinary approaches by connecting universities, researchers, practitioners, and organisations from diverse cultural, geographic, and professional backgrounds to address complex societal challenges.
Rather than promoting a single model of research, the Alliance embraces multiple ways of generating knowledge and solving problems. It supports collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and communities by developing practical methods, frameworks, and resources that enable meaningful boundary-spanning work. This pluralistic and context-sensitive approach encourages innovation while upholding the principles of academic freedom, scientific integrity, and open science.
The ITD Alliance operates as a Swiss association and is governed by its international membership through a General Assembly, an elected Leadership Board and President, an Executive Committee, and a Secretariat. Its members represent institutions and individuals across six continents, reflecting the Alliance’s truly global character.
Members engage through thematic Working Groups focused on areas such as early career researchers, transdisciplinary methods and toolkits, integration expertise, and organisational transformation. The Alliance also facilitates collaboration through regional networks, a biennial international conference, and an extensive collection of shared resources that promote learning and knowledge exchange.
Why This Membership Matters for WPU GŌA
WPU GŌA’s membership in the ITD Alliance marks an important step in strengthening its commitment to transdisciplinary education (TDE) and transdisciplinary research (TDR). Through this association, the University gains access to an international network of institutions and experts, creating valuable opportunities for faculty and students to engage with innovative research approaches, collaborative initiatives, and globally recognised best practices.
Many of today’s sustainability issues, including climate adaptation, social equity, and inclusive development, cannot be addressed through a single discipline alone. They require integrated perspectives that bring together environmental, technological, economic, cultural, and policy expertise. The ITD Alliance provides the methodologies, collaborative frameworks, and global partnerships that can help WPU GŌA advance this holistic approach to sustainability research.
The Alliance also offers a wide range of practical resources, such as guides for early-career researchers, doctoral supervision, and transdisciplinary toolkits. These resources can strengthen research capacity by supporting students and faculty in developing the skills needed for effective cross-disciplinary collaboration. Equally important, the Alliance’s emphasis on diverse knowledge systems and pluralistic ways of understanding aligns closely with WPU GŌA’s values of dialogue, openness, and respect for multiple perspectives in the pursuit of knowledge and peace.
WPU GŌA looks forward to contributing to the Alliance’s global community while learning from the collective experience and expertise of its international members.
